Gas Stations Stuck with Fines

Updated: January 7, 2009
Gas stations owners accused of hiking prices the day of the attacks may be stuck with fines. Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon is doing something about the price gouging. He has written to 28 station owners who raised prices above $2.49 a gallon. Nixon says they can pay a fine of $1,000, or three times their profits for that day. Failure to pay by the end of business October first could result in lawsuits under consumer protection laws. The legal action would seek up to $1,000 fines for each transaction. Nixon says the names of the stations aren`t being released because the matter is still under investigation.
