Sewer Tax

Updated: January 7, 2009
Joplin residents will voice their opinions about a possible sewer rate increase. Joplin City Council members will be discussing a change in the current sewer rate plan tonight. It`s a problem that`s been plaguing the city for years. But now residents may be paying sewer rates according to the amount they use instead of a flat rate. Joplin Mayor Richard Russell says the cost of operating their facilities has increased, and by fiscal year 2005 the general fund could be more than one-million dollars short. Russell says the other cities in the area already pay by usage. But that could also mean some rates would trible over the next five years. Russell says for many people it would be a 2-dollar increase in rates. But some agree paying by usage is a more fair way to go. Russell says Joplin sewer rates will still be lower than most surrounding cities. Reported By: Courtney Cullor
