Popcorn Trial Update

People using portable oxygen tanks and breathing devices crowded into the courtroom and outside as opening arguments began today in Joplin. A former worker at a popcorn plant in Jasper claims the vapors from butter flavoring caused a rare lung disease. A jury of seven women and five men was sworn in this morning. 31 year old eric peoples is awaiting a lung transplant. He`s one of 30 former plant workers suing over the syndrome known as popcorn packers lung. His is the first to come to trial the suit alleges the manufacturers knew, or should have known that butter flavorings were hazardous and should have issued safety instructions to workers. Health officials say there is no danger to consumers who microwave popcorn at home. Reported By: Jim Jackson
