Kansas National Guard

Legislators want to create new incentives and benefits that encourage Kansans to join and remain in the Kansas National Guard. They say it`s a small way of thanking the more hundreds of Kansans serving their country. Topeka`s efforts couldn`t come at a more stressful time for Army and Air Guard members and their families. About 1,100 National Guard soldiers recently were put on alert that they could be sent to Iraq in the next year. The package of bills would offer a range of benefits, from an additional income tax credit to guardsmen and women who are deployed or mobilized, to free hunting and fishing licenses. Legislators do not know how much the package would cost the state. But house speaker Doug Mays says the service of men and women in the guard is invaluable, both home and abroad.
