JOPLIN, MO -- Eddie Salazar will spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2010 murder of his 8-month-old son Eddie Salazar Jr.

A Jasper County Judge handed down the sentenced this afternoon.

Before Salazar learned his fate, his attorney Larry Maples called for a mistrial, saying evidence in the case had been mishandled.

However, the judge denied the motion.

Salazar's sister and high school friend spoke in his defense, highlighting his strong relationship and love for his son.

Prosecuting Attorney Dean Dankleson called eddie junior's mother and grandmother to the stand.

The infant's mother tearfully asked the court to seek justice and make the boy's father "pay for what he did."

A jury convicted Salazar senior last month on second-degree murder charges.

Authorities say eddie junior died from three skull fractures caused by blunt force trauma.

"We're always pleased for the victims when we can achieve justice on their behalf and as they both said today it doesn't bring Eddie Jr. back, but they do know that justice was done for the person that as the mother says took their son and treated him like a piece of trash and threw him over the bridge," Prosecuting Attorney Daen Dankleson says.

Salazar will have a chance for parole in about 27 years.

He'll also be able to appeal the court's decision.
