JOPLIN, MO - The clock is ticking for people picking up those last minute Mother's Day gifts. According to a study done by the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend $18.6 billion on Mother's Day this year, 8 percent more than last year.
The Wild Flower in Joplin made over 80 deliveries just yesterday alone. Owners say it's their second busiest holiday of the year. Local residents say despite giving gifts as tangible symbols of their appreciation, they will try to honor the true meaning of the day.
"I think it's important because every mother works hard and she needs to have a day when she is honored," said Paula Bone, Joplin resident.
"This day is for all of the unseen things moms do. They do everything from raise us to discipline us and at the end of the day, they will always be there for us." said Jeff Golden, Joplin resident.
Mother's Day was started in the early 1900's by Philadelphia resident Anna Jarvis. In 1914 Congress passed a law officially declaring the second Sunday in May Mother's Day.
