JOPLIN, MO.--- It can be tough to stay on your exercise program while on vacation, but there are ways to still workout if you plan ahead.
"Once you start an exercise routine, you want to maintain that. You don't want to get out of the habit," states Chris Drake, Wellness Coordinator for Freeman Health System.
Keeping the routine while away from home doesn't have to be impossible. Plan to walk while sightseeing increases your exercise. Even a stroll on the beach.
"You don't have the firm surface underneath you so you're going to be working harder as you take each step in the sand, you're going to have to lift your feet up. It's not the firm surface that's going to help you balance as you go along." Swimming is often on the agenda. While it is fun, it also counts towards exercise.
"Just getting out and moving is the main thing and swimming is going to burn a lot of calories, and it's going to be a good overall workout, total body workout," say Drake.
And consider riding a bike to check out the local sights.
"A lot of places have bikes you can rent. There may be trails where you're at, where you can use the bike. You can do it alone or with your family, and it's just a great way to get out and see the sights." This is your Freeman Medical Focus.
