CARTHAGE, MO--- Firefighters in Carthage have to wear 3 layers with their bunker gear. In these extreme temperatures they often take breaks and rotate personnel. They also make sure to keep hydrated with plenty of water. Also EMT's are usually on scene to check the firefighters vitals. They say men can't work for long periods at a time when they're bundled up.

"The only thing I can describe is sitting in a sauna, pretty instant. 10 to 15 minutes of extreme work is as much as they can do at one time with out taking a break," states David Myers, Carthage Fire Dept.

So far this summer, the Carthage Fire Department has battled 2 structure fires in this heat.
