MT. VERNON, MO.--- Darrel Campbell is a man of many talents. He grew up in Joplin and left to start a career in acting. One of his first breaks was back in 1994 in a soap opera called "Another Life." He then moved behind the scenes and became a writer.
"Yeah I did about 60 episodes of Days of Our Lives back in the Bo and Hope days," says Campbell.
He says writing is where he found his true passion.
"I always loved hearing my words done on stage. It felt like a natural transition from acting to writing," says Campbell.
He wrote for Home Improvement and worked with Carol Burnett.
"She's a wonderful person and we became friends. I got to write some fun things for her," says Campbell.
His latest project is a movie called "Last Ounce of Courage." He wrote the story and it's being released in 1200 movie theaters next month and he wrote it in his home in Mt. Vernon.
"I always wanted to do independent films. So, I kind of packed up my kids and moved back here to the Ozarks, they could breath fresh air," says Campbell.
The film is about a son that looses his dad in the war, and he then asks his grandfather why did he have to lose his father.
"The question I wanted to ask in the film was why our boys and girls, men and women, sacrificing their lives for us," says Campbell.
The son then learns about freedoms and how so many fight to save it.
"Freedom to speak your mind, freedom to own property, in this film, free to say Merry Christmas at Christmas time," says Campbell.
The love of Hollywood has spread to his daughter Ade. She is in his latest movies and an aspiring actress.
"He embedded some of those dreams and desires in me at a younger age. I grew up in it and it's what I know," says Adelie Campbell, Daughter.
Darrel has another gig lined up after this movie.
"Here's the big news. My first couple of Tom and Jerry episodes will be airing soon. They're animating them as we speak. I've reached the top," says Campbell.
