JOPLIN, MO.--- This may look like a birdhouse, but the only thing inside are books. It's called a little free library and was just installed in Joplin. Terry McDermid is in charge of the library and she wants to encourage reading.

"I just love readers," says Terry.

The program is nationwide and people have made unique housing for all the books. Terry says she's like to see more all over Joplin spotlighting different types of books.

"You have one by an art center that's just art books. So, you may have one in the corner of your neighborhood that's just mysteries. People get to know it," states Terry.

There are about 30 books stocked inside the little library at any given time. Dee Burnett checks out books all the time and says it's a great idea.

"Because people need to read. We have quite a few children's books and reading is awesome.," says Burnett.

The ladies have seen new friendships begin at the little library.

"Neighbors who have been friendly that they don't even know each other. They met at the little library," says Burnett.

You would think by having the books out in the open, you'd worry about people stealing them.

"we don'T worry about that. The goal is to take a book, bring a book back. If they need it then, ok," says Terry.

"There's not much money in it. So, I don't understand why. Maybe if they take it they may look at it and read it," states Burnett.
