Girard Medical Center Healing Garden

GIRARD, KS.--- Less than 2 years ago, this garden looked nothing like this.
"Construction type soil that just wouldn't accept plants," states Floyd Joliet.
So when the administrators at Girard Medical Center asked hospital volunteer Floyd Joliet to help transform it, he was immediately on board.
"we had to first of all clean all of the debris out, all of the broken concrete and blocks and pieces of wood, and then remove all of the giant weeds," states Floyd.
Floyd and his wife Barbara are both unpaid volunteers who take on projects like this because they believe in the hospital's mission.
"When you come here and you see this you get a good feeling and you know that the people in the hospital care about the emotional well being of not just the patients, but the patient's families," states Barbara.
Director of Administrative Services, Karen Wenzelburger says volunteers like the Joliets form a cornerstone of the hospital, and enable doctors and nurses to give the best care possible.
They put our patients first, they put our physicians and employees first, they do anything they can to help," states Wenzelburger.
It even gives them a place to go to get away from it all.
"The sound of the water is so calming. I just love to hear it." states Barbara
"And you see the enjoyment that people get out of it, and that's also a reward." states Floyd.
It wasn't just hospital volunteers that helped build the garden. Students from Girard High School helped move about 550 40 pound bags of new soil in to replace the dirt that was there.
