Proposed Sales Tax Brochure

Updated: January 7, 2009
The city of Joplin hears criticism from some residents. These residents question the city`s use of funds for mailing out a brochure about a proposed tax increase. The tax would add 5/8 of a cent to the current sales tax. The money made from the tax would be used for various city projects and residents are concerned about two things, the $6,000 that will be spent printing and mailing out the brochure and the legality of the city promoting something on the ballot, but Joplin city manager Steve Lewis says the city is not using the brochure to persuade voters. Steve Lewis - Joplin City Manager "It serves two purposes--one to remind the voters of the election and 2 to provide in some detail the various projects that would be conducted if it was to be approved." Lewis says the brochure will be in the mail by next week.
