JOPLIN, MO.--- For 14 year old Anthony Burton, this was a day in science class he'll never forget. In fact he whipped out his iPhone to record it to and put it on Facebook, and he had a great caption for the video.
"I caught something on fire for a grade," states Anthony Burton, 8th Grade.
His 8th grade science class learned the proper way to put out a fire with a fire extinguisher. Anthony said he could of used the experience a few years ago.
"My mom's kitchen store caught on fire. It was kind of scary. We tried to put it out with a wash cloth," states Anthony.
Kathy Weaver is an 8th grade science teacher at East Middle School in Joplin. She thought it'd be a good idea to teach the students about this life saving lesson because she was surprised how many adults have never used a fire extinguisher.
"Almost every adult I talked to have never used a fire extinguisher and I would like to try one," states Kathy Weaver, 8th Grader.
The Joplin Fire Department used a road flare to set diesel fuel on fire. They taught the kids the proper way to pull the clip and then approach the fire and to spray from side to side. It's important to learn this lesson now, instead of reading the directions during a fire.
"If the fire is in your bedroom you won't have time to read the fire extinguisher," states Kathy.
"You could burn in the fire while you're trying to read it," states Anthony.
"By the time you get done reading it, it's probably time to be out of the room," states Kathy.
The kids say this was some hot hands on experience.
"It was hot and like 100 degree it felt like," states Anthony.
This lesson could help save lives.
"To be honest, it was the funest day ever because we get to use the fire extinguisher outside," states Anthony.
