Brad's Beat: Parade of Nations Missouri Flag Representative

JOPLIN, MO.--- Ken Schramm is a running machine just ask his mother in law Carol Parker.
"He certainly is, whenever I see him, he's running by my house," states Carol Parker.
He got started running 2 years ago and found it to be addicting.
"I guess I'm crazy. It's pretty addicting once you get started," states Ken Schramm, Runner.
Now he has his sights set on the New York City Marathon. The race is huge. Imagine the whole population of Joplin putting on their shoes and running. That's because 50 thousand people do it every year.
"It's heel to heel, shoulder to shoulder. The first wave is about 15,000 people that are trying to get across the bridge. It's a madhouse," states Schramm.
Schramm will also be representing the State of Missouri. He'll be part of the Parade of Nations ceremony this Friday.There will be 75 countries there, and for the United States, there will be 50 flags for the states. He'll hold the Missouri flag, and it's sort of like the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
"I was really thrilled. It's such an honor to represent Missouri," says Schramm.
He had to write an essay on why he'd like to carry the flag. He was chosen because he mentioned that he wanted to thank everyone who volunteered during the Joplin tornado.
"It's kind of my way of saying thank you to all the people have come to help us," states Schramm.
The recent hurricane won't delay the race. In fact he says it'll be a nice way to take people's mind off of the damage.
"I think it will be, forget the cleanup because so many New York people come out to watch and view the race. it's an excellent experience," states Schramm.
