Participant Reactions on New York Marathon Being Canceled

JOPLIN, MO.--- "We're kinda heartbroken," states Ken Schramm, Missouri Flag Representative Runner.
Ken Schramm and his family flew into New York today, only to find out Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided to cancel Sunday's New York Marathon.
"To find out this late in the game that it's been cancelled is really really hard to swallow," states Schramm.
Earlier today, Bloomberg said the race would go on, but then after 4 this afternoon, he reversed his decision. Bloomberg said he didn't want a cloud hanging over the race or its participants following devastation from Hurricane Sandy. Schramm says he understands why the event was cancelled, but wishes it would have been handled differently.
"To wait this late when everybody is put forth the travel to get here, um, I mean it would have been more understandable and acceptable to call it on Monday or Tuesday after the tragedy, I mean the whole world would have really understood," states Schramm.
Now his family is out thousands of dollars and he's not alone, there were 47 thousand runners scheduled to participate.
"I know a lot of these people had a lot of other expenses to make sure they can get here," states Schramm.
While Schramm and his family is disappointed, they're not going to let what happened spoil their fun in New york.
"We're going to make the most of it," states Schramm.
Tonight Schramm, his wife and kids went to a show on Broadway. He's also planning to run while in New York City even though there isn't a marathon, he hopes to run through Central Park.
