GALENA, KS.--- A few hundred veterans crowded the Galena High School gym to break bread with the students. Each veteran teamed up with a high school student for the day so they could get a first hand history lesson. Gerald Gillming was teamed up with 16 year old Jessica Cromwell.

"A joy to be around. I got a really good one this year too," states Gerarld Gillming, Army Veteran.

"Everybody has a story. Whenever I first met him, I didn't think he'd been to freaking Germany, everywhere else in the world and ended up here. I think it's crazy," states Jessica Cromwell, Junior, Galena High School.

Gerald is an Army veteran with 23 years of experience. He's taken part in the ceremony for a few years and it always warms his heart.

"You see so much patriotic feeling it does the heart good," states Gillming.

The students say the veterans give them a much better history lesson than any book.

"They show us to be thankful for what we do have, to be grateful," states Cormwell.

Gerard says it's nice to talk to the younger generation but he wouldn't want to switch places and be a teenager again.

"Me? No I was a nerd when I was 16," states Gillming.

"Nerds are cool. I love nerds," says Cormwell.

He thinks kids today are a lot smarter than he was back in the day.

"I believe they are. The things we didn't know when we were 16, they're grade school stuff," states Gillming.

Gerard says this Sunday we should all take time to honor our brave men and women.

"Say a prayer for our county. All of our veterans all of our armed forces in house way," states Gillming.
