JOPLIN, MO.--- A 63 year old mystery has been solved. Pete Schlau is from Joplin and has met his sister Diane Eden for the first time.
"This is when it was meant to happen," states Pete Schlau.
Pete was adopted at childbirth and little did he know he had 2 sisters and a brother. It wasn't until some research on Ancestory.com that Pete was able to finally track down his sister in Arizona. The two recently met in Joplin and they'll never forget it.
"I walked up and had my hand kind of half way out there, we were going to shake, and I said heck with it and I gave her a hug. I didn't know if I said it out loud or thought it. I've waited 63 years for this," states Pete.
Diane says Pete has a striking resemblance to their father.
"He looks so much like my father. Even my husband noted that," states Diane Eden.
Their mother passed away in the mid 1990's and she told her children that Pete had died as a baby.
"Makes me sad. My mother was never able to share with us what happened. I'm sure it broke her heart. Wouldn't she be sorry not to have met you," states Diane.
"There's an answer out there that I may never know. I've learned I'm better off not knowing certain things," states Pete.
They suspect money was a factor.
"I know that we were very poor. We were very poor, that had a lot to do with it. Beyond that, I'll never know," states Diane.
Diane recently sent Pete a family scrapbook for him to look through. They discovered that they even went to the same high school.
"We both were in the same high school for 1 year. At the same time, I was a senior and Pete was a freshman," states Diane.
So what's it's like to have a new sister in the family later in life?
"So far it's been great. We'll see if she pulls my hair. There's not much left," states Pete.
The two say this story can teach people to never give up in your search.
"You never know what's in store for you in life, and to keep an open mind. You never know who's gonna knock on your door and it may be a wonderful thing for you," states Diane.
