JOPLIN, MO.---- Donald Smith says after standing outside for 10 hours a day ringing this bell, he doesn't even hear it anymore. He's one of the many bell ringers collecting money for the Salvation Army this holiday season, and he says he's glad to do it.
"There's no better way to spend the time of year than to spend my time ringing the bell," states Donald Smith, Bell Ringer.
This is the 2nd year he's been a bell ringer and he says he's got a secret weapon.
"People say I have a million dollar smile. So I just use that," states Smith.
The goal this year is half a million dollars from the kettles. Lt. James Curry with the Salvation Army says more people need help this year.
"We help about 10,000 people a year. We had 70,000 meals we do, 365 days a year. We feed about 300 people a day," states Lt. James Curry, Salvation Army.

Donald knows first hand how much the group helps.
"They've helped me, my mom member of my family over the years. That's why I have no problem ringing this bell cause it's a wonderful cause," states Smith.
Each bell ringer is hoping the Secret Santa hits their kettles. Last year he donated $50,000.
"Yes, I do, but it doesn't matter as long as he hits one of us up. It all goes to the same place," states Smith.
There are perks to the job. Donald says some of the ladies tend to flirt with him.
"Yes, I have had that. I don't think I should tell it cause my my wife would be watching," states Smith.
"They've been offered cocktails, they've been assaulted. They've tried to take the kettle running down the while the guy is yelling at them. They put up with a ton," states Curry.
