MSSU "Recycled Goods Fashion Show"

JOPLIN, MO.--- There were lights, cameras, and plenty of action today at the Missouri Southern Student Center.
"Today we're here to raise awareness for recycling, all of the clothes that the models are wearing today are made of at least 50 percent of post consumer waste," states Rochelle Delucia, President, Environmental Health Club.
It's exactly the type of get up you would expect in a "Recycled Goods Fashion Show."
"I always say it's not a duct tape dress, it's actually decent clothing that they have used recycling material to make," states Delucia.
The Joplin Recycling Center and Missouri Southern's Environmental Health Club members hope the event makes more than just a fashion statement.
"One day there won't be more and all of the mining of things all contributes to climate change and the less of the raw materials we can use, the better we are all around," states Delucia.
For some students, seeing clothes and bags made from old tires, cans, and water bottles was a testament to the power of recycling.
"Now that I have actually seen the problems and what's going on and delved into the topics and stuff it's become more a part of my life also," states Camden Spruce, Environmental Health Club Member.
At the end of the day, local environmentalists say they hope this event will make everyone reconsider their definition of "trash".
"There was stuff that you can't reuse or put in the recycling bin or turn into fertilizer or more productive means than just putting it in a landfill and just letting it sit," states Spruce.
Event organizers say it's especially important to promote recycling in Missouri because the amount of waste our state produces nearly doubles the national average.
