Pittsburg International Property Maintenance Code

PITTSBURG, KS.--- Pittsburg city officials are proposing a more standard housing code when it comes to rental properties and commercial buildings. It's called the International Property Maintenance Code, and it's used by thousands of cities across the nation. Property owners had their first chance to look at the proposal tonight at a town hall meeting with Pittsburg City officials. If adopted, it could change the city requirements on issues like ventilation, heating, and electrical hazards. Some landlords at the meeting voiced concerns that changes to the code, could leave to expensive fines during inspections. However city officials say that's not the case.
"What we want is a decent safe and sanitary housing these are the minimum requirements, there's nothing special here. It's not telling them what color the house has to be painted," states Bill Beasley, Director, Pittsburg Public Works

Officials with the Public Works Department hope to put the proposal in front of the Pittsburg City Council within the next 30 days. If it's adopted by the council, the new code could be in place in early January.
