Recycling Center Rules

JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin Recycling Center workers say they can be different plastics or have a different melting point, which can be considered a contaminant by some companies that buy the materials. Only 1 in 5 cell phone users bothers to recycle their old phone, something the Joplin Recycling Center is taking more seriously.
"Used to be I only took electronics twice a year, now I take them every day we're open. It used to be that we never took medications, pharmaceuticals, or we'd have it twice a year. Now we have it every day at the Joplin Police stations," states Mary Anne Phillips, Joplin Recycling Center.
Even a pizza box, which you might think is a no brainer for cardboard. If it has grease or cheese, that's contaminated and shouldn't be recycled. Some of the rules are easier than you might think. Take the envelopes with a clear plastic window. Those are okay at the Joplin Recycling Center, workers say the plastic isn't enough to make a difference in the overall load.
