PITTSBURG, KS --  With shovels in hand, hospital workers and city officials broke ground on Via Christi's new surgical center.

The 40-thousand square foot facility is set to be completed in the next 18 to 24 months.

Blake Benson with the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce says the $20-million addition is expected to have a $16-million economic impact once completed.

He adds it will spike retail sales by $6 million annually.

"There's an even bigger long term impact of not only keeping our local residents here for heir healthcare but also attracting more residents throughout southeast kansas to come to Pittsburg," says Blake Benson, Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce President.

The surgical center will be mostly funded through an $18-million bond.
