Wheaton Apartment Complex Fire Leaves 5 Dead

WHEATON, MO.--- "I could see the flames as I was approaching from 7 or 8 miles out," states Clint Clark, Wheaton Police Chief.
Wheaton Police Chief, Clint Clark says when he arrived at the blue ridge apartment complex the building was already engulfed in flames.
"We had 7 or 8 crews here working the fire," states Clark.
Clark says crews pulled the bodies of 2 adults and a child from one unit. 2 other adults were found in another apartment nearby. Investigators are not releasing the names or ages of the victims.
"8 apartments were destroyed, the other 8 in the adjoining building were evacuated,"
Investigators believe the fire may have started in an upstairs apartment, and spread to the rest of the building, but have not released a cause yet. The Red Cross supplied shelter for 16 people left homeless because of the blaze, but as word of the fire spread throughout the town, the tragedy was felt by all.
"Everybody knows everyone around, if they don't' they know someone that was affected," states Gary Still, Wheaton Resident.
Within 5 hours people dropped off clothing, food, water, and toys to help the families left with nothing after the fire.
"We're just set up here just trying to supply them if they need anything," states Still.
Thanksgiving is traditionally a time spent with family, and this year these volunteers will spend their time helping families who have lost everything.
"This is what it's about right here, get out here and help these people," states Still.
However volunteers are in need of non perishable food, clothing, and other supplies to help these families through this tragedy. If someone would like to donate they can call the number on the bottom of the screen, that's 417-652-3632.
