CARTHAGE, MO.--- Bradford Kohlbush likes to think outside the box. He has a broken back and it's going to cost $80,000 to fix it.
"I broke the bone off of the L5 vertebrae that holds the vertebra in place," states Bradford Kohlbusch.
He was a mechanic and broke it while lifting heavy equipment.
"It hurts 80% of the time.""When I first did it I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe," states Bradford.
He lost his job while on medical leave, but he still needed the surgery. So he decided to pay for it by opening a new business.
"Little bit nuts. I hope it works out," states Bradford.
He opened the Carthage Consignment Shop to sell various antiques. It's located right across from the Carthage Police Department. He says it's sadly cheaper to open a new business than pay for back surgery.
"I decided since no one would hire me and I can't get insurance. I'd open the flea market," states Bradford.
He says he has to take it easy but this is a lot easier than being a mechanic. He thinks more people should think outside the box to fix their problems.
"I think if some people did like I did there'd be a lot more people that have their own jobs They could make more money for themselves," states Bradford.
His friend Brandy Maynard helped get the store up and running.
"We've tried to keep the costs down as best as we can. It's just that everything is so expensive," states Brady Maynard.
Bradford says he's not sure how long it will take to raise the money, but he says its worth a shot.
"Once I got up and going it would take care of itself so I could make the money to pay for the back," states Bradford.
Bradford's store is open 7 days a week, and if you'd like to stop by the name is the Carthage Consignment Shop. It's located just off Downtown Carthage across from the police station.
