JOPLIN, MO.--- Freeman geriatric physicians say scams on the elderly increase during the holiday season. It's generally because people are in a more giving mood. Doctors say the elderly should be aware of solicitors, people on the phone asking for donations, as well as people offering to hang up decorations around their homes. Physicians say brain changes make the elderly more prone to these scams.

"As we age part of our brain changes a little bit, we may not be able to recognize what is going on in the situation," states Dr. Henry Petry, Freeman Center for Geriatric Medicine.

Freeman physicians recommend that if you are in doubt about a situation, ask someone else for advice and ask to see credentials when solicitors are at your door.
