JOPLIN, MO.--- Kindergarteners and 1st graders from Jefferson Elementary School gave away hot chocolate at the 7th street Walgreens this afternoon. The warm beverages went to anyone who donated a nonperishable food item, which will be given to Watered Gardens. The kids also sold crafts they made in art class for a dollar each, with proceeds going to the homeless shelter.

Teachers say it was a good opportunity to teach their students the importance of community service.

"They're really excited that their art work and some of their cans that they can bring to school will go to a good cause and feed those that are a little less fortunate during the holiday season," states Monica Bay, Jefferson Elementary School Teacher.

The students also sang Christmas carols while members of the Jefferson School PTA sold baked goods.
