JOPLIN, MO.--- This morning, Joplin Mercy Hospital clinic leaders presented a $10,000 check to the Joplin School District. The money will be used to help buy food for the district's Weekend Backpack Program. School leaders say it costs about $4. 20 to send a backpack home for the weekend, so this donation will go a long way and help a lot of children in need.
"The needs here are great, and I think that donations like this help us to fill that need and it takes a lot of effort on our part to go out and raise the money to do that. So when we get a big check like this to support such a valuable program, it really means a lot," states Dr. C.J. Huff, Joplin Schools Superintendent.
"With the struggles we have had here in Joplin, this effort was seen as a very deserving program to help the school system, which has been a symbol of the rebirth of Joplin ever since the tornado," states Sean Smith, D.O. Mercy Physician.
Hospital employees raised the money through their "Feed the Need" community grant program. Donations totaling $108,000 allowed Mercy to present this check to the school district, along with seperate donations to 8 other community organizations.
