JOPLIN, MO.--- The Joplin Police Department are asking you to use good judgment when setting certain items on the curb because thieves are watching. Joplin police say home burglaries increase during the holiday season.
About 54 thefts happen during December and January of each year compared to about 40 in other months. Officers say boxes of expensive gifts like TV's sitting beside your trash gives criminal a motive to break into your home.

"Hide them. Cut them up so they're smaller, so you don't have to worry about people knowing you got a $2,000 television this time of year," states Cpl. Joe Cowis, Joplin Police Department.
JPD officers also say it's a good idea to keep boxes of expensive items in your garage until pickup day or take them to a recycling center as soon as you can
