JOPLIN, MO.--- A new survey released by the American Pet Products Association finds a growing number of cats and dogs will get gifts today. Their research shows 53% of dogs and 38% of cats will receive holiday gifts. Local veterinarians say this trend is not surprising as the role of pets in peoples' lives has evolved over time.

"Clients come in all the time and they say, oh this is my baby, they are like my kids. They treat them as such, they let them sleep on the bed with them and they buy them treats after going to the doctor just like you would a kid," states Allison Moret, Veterinarian Technician.

The report goes on to say shoppers are estimated to spend nearly $53 billion on their pets this year. That figure is up 4% from last year.
