GALENA -- A fire broke out around 9:20PM Friday at an empty house on east 5th street. Firefighters from Baxter Springs and Galena responded. Upon arrival, they found the building was totally engulfed in flames. Investigators discovered the home had been vacant for some time. Fire crews say it was an older house, which made the fire even more difficult to extinguish.

"It has a metal roof on it that contained the fire," says Galena fire chief Bill Hall. "It was difficult to get to, we couldn't get anybody inside. We used our ladder truck. We had to pour hundreds of gallons of water on it, but it is a total loss."

"There were no injuries sustained from the fire. Emergency workers say they were fortunate there was very little wind or else the fire could have been much worse.
