JOPLIN, MO.--- Some congressional republicans want significant spending cuts in exchange for raising the borrowing limit. Some lawmakers say this could shortchange social security recipients, including veterans and the poor.

According to Emery Hutson, 57,  who relies on federal disability checks so he can afford to live on his own, that would seriously hurt him financially.

"It makes me nervous when they start talking about cutting back, but I don't think it will become a real big issue because it would affect too many votes," states Emery Hutson, Social Security Recipient.
White House officials say if congress doesn't foot the bills somehow, it could put the nation into default.
