JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin City Hall sees a double digit drop in sales tax revenue. January totals are down 17% from the same month last year. It's a difference of half a million dollars, and brings the year-to-date total to a 7% decrease.
The Joplin finance director says the city has seen big month-to-month changes recently, so some of that loss could be offset next month, which will include December receipts.
"We should see most of the Christmas sales next month. Obviously it depends on when people were shopping, but the majority should be next month and the following month," states Leslie Jones, Joplin Finance Director.
City officials predicted a downturn in sales tax revenue in 2013, budgeting 1% less than in the 2012 fiscal year.
