CARTHAGE, MO.--- The Carthage Fire Department would like to install 7 dry hydrants throughout their coverage area. A dry hydrant is used in rural areas where there isn't a nearby hydrant that's connected to the city water system.
Firefighters could use the dry hydrants by pumping water from a nearby water source such as a pond or a stream through a hose connected to a fire truck. That truck could also serve as a pumping station for other trucks.
"We have no way of getting into the trucks now, so if we set up these dry hydrants that will let us be able to pump into those trucks and get to the fire sooner," states Tom Nixon, Fire Marshal.
The fire marshal is working with county commissioners to figure out areas to put the hydrants and then apply for grant money for the project.
The city received the recognition as a "Firewise Community" on January 1st, which makes them eligible for grant money to fund the project. The fire chief expects it to cost around $6,000.
