Joplin, Mo.--- Bob Boyles is the owner of Flames in Joplin. He says you should only burn wood that has been seasoned for more than a year. It's also recommended to avoid green wood. That is harder to burn and it releases creosote into your chimney. That can catch fire and be dangerous.
"When it catches fire, it can burn at temperatures at well over 2000 degrees and cause a lot of damage to the chimney itself. Sometimes it can get out of the chimney and into the attic. Chimney's are designed just to vent smoke not to hold fires," says Bob Boyles, Flames.
Boyles says the best seasoned wood to burn is oak and hickory.
