CARL JUNCTION, MO.--- Local seniors met at the Carl Junction Community Center for a brief seminar on volunteer options. Shelly Goerz from the Joplin Independent Living Center spoke about the retired and senior volunteer program, which is better known as R.S.V.P.

It's designed to give people ages 55 and older the opportunity to contribute to community organizations like Wildcat Glades, Hospices, and even The Boys And Girls Club. She says older Americans can benefit from volunteering because it keeps them active and makes them feel more relevant in society.

"They're my favorite group to work with because they have seen so much, they are so wise, they are so dedicated, they are reliable. So an R.S.V.P. volunteer is going to show up when they are supposed to and get the job done," says Shelly Goerz, R.S.V.P., Director of Independent Living Center.

There are more than 300 R.S.V.P. volunteers throughout the four county area the Joplin Independent Living Center services. Program directors say events like this help them average about 40 new volunteers each year.
