CARTHAGE, MO.--- Shelby Shores, 10, has been making great strides thanks to the help of Children's Miracle Network and a special doctor.
"We need that extra help to get her the care she needs and deserves," states Claire Shores, Mother.
Shelby has a rare form of muscular dystrophy known as B.C.H, causing her body to get tired easily.
"For Shelby, if she stands in line, for example, she goes around to get her tray, by the time she gets her tray and walks to the table her arms are already shaking from that decreased muscle strength in her upper body," says Shores.
Two summers ago, Claire Shores came across the name of Doctor Ronald Cohn who was studying the disorder Shelby has.
"Dr. Cohn gave us the biggest blessing. He gave us the opportunity for a free office visit with him in John's Hopkins. The only catch is we had to get her there and he would handle the rest," states Shores.
The family didn't know how to fund the trip. That's when they found the help of Children's Miracle Network who paid for lodging and fuel to see the doctor.
"Over this last year, he's helped Shelby get medical. He's written a dictation for her, so now receives a laptop at school and at home due to her wrist muscles weakening. She's allowed to use her scooter because her body is fatiguing more," says Shores.
The specialist has helped Shelby make great progress. Now, he's in Canada but still getting her the free care she needs.
"The care that my daughter receives, she can only receive in Toronto, Canada. She can't receive it here in the states," states Shores.
Claire says the care they've received means the world to them.
"She's so much happier. For Shelby, that's huge for her to talk to a doctor and feel that comfort," says Shores.
You can help support Shelby and her travel costs to Canada. We at KSN and KODE will be playing in a benefit basketball game versus staff from Carthage schools. For more information, click here.
