WYANDOTTE, OK.--- "159 kids in one day gone," states Trishia Masterson, Wyandotte Teacher.

6 teachers also stayed home today because of the flu.

"You're coughing, blowing noses, everything," says Masterson.

Teachers say lessons are becoming counterproductive as more kids are becoming ill.

"If you don't feel well, if you're nauseated, you just can't focus, even though you're physically here, mentally you don't learn like you should," says Masterson.

Wyandotte schools will close Thursday and Friday. The goal is to help avoid spreading the illness and help students stay current in class work.

"Is this out of control? No. We're trying to be proactive and hit something off," states Troy Gray, Wyandotte Superintendent.

"This will give everybody an opportunity to get well and come back and be ready to learn," says Masterson.

During the shutdown, all night shift janitors will work during the day to disinfect the school.

"That will allow them to come in, wipe down, and help accelerate that process," says Gray.

Janitors will also fumigate each classroom in every building.

"A proactive approach, not a panic situation but try to stop something that has potential of becoming a big problem of absenteeism," say Gray.

Superintendent Gray says he didn't cancel school today to give parents a chance to find daycare for their kids. The extra measures will continue for about 2 weeks.
