Spiva & Boy Scouts

JOPLIN -- Spiva Center for the Arts hosted a Webelo workshop Saturday for some of Joplin's Boy Scouts. The class was taught by local clay artist Linda Brown. Students learned the basics of art and clay construction. The Scouts were asked to draw a self portrait and transfer it to a clay tile. According to Boy Scouts of America guidelines, the workshop fulfills the requirement to earn the "academic art" belt loop. It also meets three requirements for the academic art pin and three of five requirements for the Webelo's "artist activity" badge.
"They have a good time," Brown says. "It uses their imagination and creativity. We're going to do something a little different with thee tiles. They're actually going to look in a mirror and do a self portrait."
Boy Scout student Kaius Legg says, "Getting a Webelo is like... I'm not sure how to really describe it. But it's really fun if you're actually a Webelo."
The next academic event at Spiva will be "Clay for Tots" Saturday, February 2.
