JOPLIN, MO.--- The Missouri Senate Bill 13 would eliminate solid waste management districts throughout the state. It would also reduce landfill tipping fees which are used for grant money. Regional offices then disperse that grant money.

The bill would close those offices and give the department of natural resources authority over the funding. Local leaders are worried the change could mean less money for southwest Missouri projects.

"We need to continue it the way it's running now. We have a board here in southwest Missouri that is run through the Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council and we need to keep that local," said Jim Honey, Jasper County Commissioner.

Joplin and Carthage city council members have already voted in opposition to the bill.
