According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 percent of women and 15 percent of men first experience partner violence between the ages of 11 and 17.
Carthage High School Guidance counselors say preventing potentially dangerous dating habits during the teenage years is crucial.
"They are the prime target group that it's likely to happen to so we have to get the word out to help protect their safety and to learn how to foster healthy loving relationships," Shelley Wilson, CHS Guidance Counselor.
Dating violence can either be emotional or physical. Experts say it generally begins with verbal or emotional abuse and can escalate from there.
