NEVADA, MO. --- The commission agreed to a contract to help neighboring St. Clair County alleviate jail over-crowding.

Vernon County will receive $35 a day per inmate. If there are more than five, that price will drop to $30 a day.

The sheriff hopes the reduced fee will be an incentive to send more inmates to their jail.

Last year, Vernon County brought in $478,000 by housing inmates from other counties.More than $48,000 came from St. Clair County. County leaders expect the program to generate about $400,000 this year.
