JOPLIN, MO.--- Laughter is the idea behind an event that was hosted tonight by the Freeman Diabetes Support Group. Doctors say it's not laughing at the chronic illness as much as it's laughing with it, that helps someone push through and deal with the idea of being sick.

Laughing releases endorphins that stimulate the reward center of our brain. Vicky Mieseler is a licensed psychologist at the Freeman Ozark Center. She tell us medicine is, of course, important, but humor helps deal with sickness.

"There's nothing better than a big belly laugh to help someone get moving in a different direction. It gives you a different perspective, it helps you see things a little bit more realistic and less threatening," said Vicky Mieseler, V.P. of Clinical Services.

Humor allows someone to make better decisions, listen to the doctor, and bring in family and friends for more support.
