JOPLIN, MO.--- For the next 12 hours, a winter storm warning remains in effect. Many school leaders took precautions well in advance of the storm.

Due to many bus routes being rural, Neosho, Diamond, and McDonald County school districts sent students home early this afternoon.

Some churches have already canceled service for tonight. MODOT started preparing for today's storm last night by stocking their trucks with sand.

"Well if we can get ahead of the game, then we'll know something is coming in, we can get our bridges treated, because those are going to freeze up before anything will," said Ryan Boyd, MODOT Employee.

He adds, unless there's an emergency, you should try to avoid driving in these conditions.
