JOPLIN -- Members of the Irving, Emerson and Cecil Floyd Bright Futures Council threw a chili feed benefit for Kelly Miller Saturday afternoon. The family has ties to al three schools with Miller teaching at Emerson, her husband working at Cecil Floyd and their children attending Irving. Miller was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer around Christmas, and her fellow teachers are hoping to raise a few thousand dollars to help offset her growing medical bills. Miller's principal says the 5th grade teacher has kept in good spirits since her diagnosis, only missing school a few times since December.

"We're just hoping to show Mrs. Miller that, you know, there's hope," says Emerson elementary school principal Nila Vance. "There's a lot of people that care about her and everybody wants to help her through this time."

"She's been, by far, one of my favorite teachers ever, so I just kind of want to let her know that I really do care about her and it's the least I can do, to be here and help," says Mrs. Miller's former student Ashlyn Washburn.

If you would like to help the Miller family, stop by any of the three participating elementary schools at any time to donate.
