JOPLIN -- Volunteers with the Southwest Missouri Skywarn community are preparing for storm season. The group is made up of eleven HAM Radio operators serving southwest Missouri and extreme southeast Kansas communities. Operators say they go through more than 30 hours of training to become radio certified, and then attend storm spotter classes regularly. Operators also say they are in constant contact with emergency managers, National Weather Service meteorologists and local media during a severe weather event.

"We relay watches and warnings via the NWS chat, Iembot, Interwarn," says Skywarn Net director John Kashirsky. "We're there for their eyes and communication with our spotters."
