GIRARD, KS.--- Crawford County leaders are able to preserve thousands of historic maps thanks to a grant. The maps have been restored and are neatly filed in steel filing cabinets or boxes.

The project to preserve the maps was made possible by a $3,500 grant from the Kansas Humanities Council. More than 6,300 city, county, community and mining maps were preserved. The oldest dates back to the 1800's.

"If you don't preserve them, they're lost. And there's a lot of important information on those maps. Some of them are duplicates of maps that are in other places but some of them are original," says Susie Thom, Crawford County Govt. Clerk.

The project's total cost was $11,000. It was a year worth's of work, totaling about 440 hours of labor.
