The icy conditions don`t just wreak havoc on travelers. Ice accumulating on trees can result in downed branches, often causing power outages. That`s why officials with Empire District Electric Company are sending out a warning. First, never touch downed power lines or use any objects to move the lines. Also, don`t attempt to cut or remove a tree that is entangles with power lines. If you do lose power, officials say do not open the refrigerator or freezer. Food will remain safe in the fridge for three to four hours and two to three days in the freezer, if the door remains closed. To report a power outage or a downed tree limb or power line, call 624-0300 or 800-206-2300. It doesn`t end there. Officials say it`s also important to protect your pipes from the cold conditions. Officials with Missouri American Water Company are offering tips to keep your pipes from freezing and rupturing. First, insulate your pipes. You can wrap them with insulating pipe sleeves or blankets. Also, leave cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to reach the pipes. Eliminate drafts by sealing crawl space vents and check to see that basement doors and windows are tightly closed. Keep faucets on just enough that a steady stream of water the size of a pencil lead is running.
