The prison population in the United States hits an all-time high. A department of justice report says 6.5 million people are either behind bars, paroled or on probation. The U.S. federal and state adult correctional population rose 2% last year to reach that record level. The report says 3.1% of adults in the United States are part of the country`s correctional population. That`s equal to the entire populations of either Virginia or Massachusetts, the 12th and 13th largest states in the country. The U.S. has the largest prison and jail population in the world.
