Updated: January 7, 2009
After four years of service, a Four State police chief announces he`s stepping down. Earlier Wednesday afternoon, Joplin City Manager Steve Lewis announced he as received the resignation of Joplin Police Chief Ed Dennis effective March 15th. Lewis says under Ed Dennis, the Joplin Police Department underwent a period of rapid growth and enhancement that will continue into the future. But effective March 15th, it will be under a new chief. Chief Dennis arrived in Joplin in 1998 and quickly began implementing changes in the department including community oriented policing, increased patrol staffing and departmental computerization. In a written release, Chief Dennis says he and his wife now have two grandchildren in Chicago and they have struggled to maintain a necessary balance between work and family during his four year tenure. Chief Dennis says he and his wife will miss Joplin greatly, but the best interest of his family must be the top priority. Chief Dennis` final day will be March 15th in order to maintain a smooth and orderly transition for the department.
