Bears-Giants Preview 8/22/12

By: Scott Leber
Updated: August 22, 2012

The Chicago Bears (1-1) will play on prime time national television in the preseason for the seventh time in the last eight years when they travel to New Jersey to take on the New York Giants (1-1) on Friday.

With starting QB Jay Cutler making his first appearance of 2012 last Saturday, the Bears first team offense scored 17 points on four drives (two touchdowns and one field goal) and the first team defense had three sacks and one takeaway in less than one half of work.  That paved the way for a 33-31 victory over the Washington Redskins to even Chicago's preseason record to 1-1.

The Bears and Giants will be squaring off in the preseason on national TV (CBS) for the second straight season. They appeared on ESPN's Monday Night Football in 2011. In the 22 previous preseason contests between the Bears and Giants Chicago holds a 15-7 advantage. The Giants took last year's game 41-13.

The Bears are 17-18 in preseason contests under head coach Lovie Smith, including a .500 or better mark in six of his eight seasons.

Friday's game will be the first of two road contests in seven days to wrap up the preseason for the Bears. They'll travel to Cleveland to close out their preseason against the Browns on Thursday, August 30.
